Basics of Couponing - Part 1

When I started learning about couponing last March, I was reading so much about how to coupon and felt overwhelmed very quickly.  There is a lot of information out there.  Sound familiar?

I decided that I was going to stick with it and take it one step at a time.  The thing that kept me going was getting one or two awesome deals here and there.  I started to "get it" and the whole process became a little easier.   We needed to find a way to save money and I was determined to try every suggestion out there to do just that within our grocery budget.  I was tired of leaving the grocery store discouraged by how much we were spending.

Through the process, I realized there are 3 main things you need to do to get the most out of couponing.  Can you save money by only doing one or even 2 of these things?  Yes......but I really believe you won't see the drastic savings you are probably looking for until you do all three.  Over the next week or so, I plan to dive into each of these in more detail to help you better understand each one.

  1. Matching coupons with store sales
    •  Wait for the time when the item is at its cheapest before you use the coupon to buy it.
  2. Know the policies of your local stores
    • Does your store offer store coupons that you can stack with manufacturer coupons?
    • Do they double coupons?
  3. Stockpile...stockpile...stockpile
    • Stock up enough product to last you until the next sale,
Let me know your thoughts.  Where are you on your couponing journey?

  3. I am just starting but always get discouraged after checking out. Not sure how to match coupons with things not listed in the sales flyer. Do I have to go to the store before shopping and make a list of sales??

  4. Try not to get discouraged. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. It takes some time to figure this out for you and your budget.

Sometimes different blogs out there, including mine, will post information about items that are on a good sale, but not listed in the flyer. You won't always know about these deals.

I go mainly by the sale flyers and plan my grocery trip according to that. That is where stockpiling really helps lower your budget. If you are mainly buying items to continue your stockpile, you won't need the items that aren't on sale.

My suggestion is just work with what you know is on sale and keep your eye open for other great deals when you are at the store. If you have all your coupons with you, you can take advantage of those deals.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope this helps. If you have other questions, let me know! I love to help anyway I can! :)
